Chris Eubank Jnr’s trainer has been charged with two firearm offences after a gun was allegedly found in his suitcase at an airport.

Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre was held at Manchester Airport on Sunday morning and appeared at Stockport Magistrates Court on Monday.

A weapon was said to have been discovered during baggage scans at the airport as McIntyre attempted to fly out of the country to Atlanta in the United States.

McIntyre, 53, was remanded in custody ahead of a pre-trial plea hearing at crown court on October 9. He was charged with possession of a Smith and Wesson handgun and seven rounds of ammunition.

He had been arrested in the departure lounge at the airport’s terminal two the morning after Eubank Jnr’s one-sided victory over Liam Smith in a sold-out night at Manchester Arena.

McIntyre, a former boxer, had been praised for his work with Eubank Jnr, who staged arguably the most accomplished performance of his career on Saturday night.

Greater Manchester Police said in an initial statement: “At around 10:45am on Sunday, 3 September 2023, officers were called to reports of a possible firearm being found in hold luggage by airport staff at Manchester Airport. After initial inspection by security staff, GMP officers attended, and the firearm was seized. Subsequently, a man has been arrested for possession of a firearm and remains in custody for further questioning.”

McIntyre, who also trains Terence Crawford, is widely regarded as one of the best trainers in boxing, having also helped super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring and Amir Khan.

Eubank Jnr, meanwhile, had produced a brilliant performance from the opening round on Saturday, first sending Smith to the canvas in the fourth round and again in the 10th, as he secured the 34th win of his professional career.

“I had no other choice [but to beat Smith]. There’s too many other big fights out there for me that the fans want to see, that I want to be involved in,” Eubank said in the ring after the bout.

His team was contacted for comment about McIntyre’s arrest by Telegraph Sport.
